Is Too Much Chlorine Bad For Your Pool?

Have you ever found yourself in a position where you added way too much chlorine in your pool? Majority of people have done it. For most it’s accidental and for some, it’s intentional in the hopes that more chlorine will be better for the disinfection of the pool. In truth, too much chlorine is actually bad for you and for the pool.

How too much chlorine affects you and the pool

Over-chlorination in pool water has been known to cause skin, eye and lung irritation as well as provoking asthma. Aside from that, there is the risk of chlorine poisoning from the excessive inhalation of the toxic fumes released from over-chlorination. This is because of the existence of chloramines in the water, which lower the pH of water considerably and result in increased water acidity. This is also what damages your pool. Too much acidity in the water results in corrosion of pipes, which accelerates their wear and undermines the structural integrity of your pool’s construction.

How much is too much?

The amount of chlorine that you add to your pool is dependent on the amount of water in the pool. You can’t just eyeball it and hope to get the right amount. Before you start chlorinating the water in your pool, you should have an expert come and give you the measurements and explain how best to chlorinate your pool. Having said that, what exactly should one do if they suspect that they added a little too much chlorine?

What to do in the event of over-chlorination

The first step is to be sure that there is indeed over-chlorination. For this, you should do a pH test and a chlorine level test. If both tests are in the ballpark, then you can rest easy. However, if the tests prove that you’ve added a little too much chlorine, you should take steps to mitigate this. Keep in mind that the steps are dependent on the severity of the situation.

  • Uncover the pool

It goes without saying that you shouldn’t add more chlorine to the pool at this point. Instead, you should uncover your pool and let it soak in the sunlight. The UV radiation is known to destroy chlorine, thereby reducing its levels and toxicity in the water.

  • Chemically neutralize it

The next step should be the addition of chemicals that neutralize the chlorine such as Sodium Thiosulfate. Keep in mind that you shouldn’t add too much of these chemicals lest you neutralize all the chlorine.

How to Find the Right Pool For You

How to Find the Right Pool For You

The question most people looking into pool construction ask themselves is how big the pool should be. Finding the right constructor is essential if you want your needs met. The size, shape and depth can be pulled off if you have the right person for the job. However, it has to be done right as there is no turning back once the pool is on the ground. Before looking into construction consider the following factors;

Pool shape and design

Installing a pool is a big decision. You can get a quote with Pinnacle USA, Inc. , a Naples pool construction company, and have them build you an attractive pool. Consider the shape and budget you can manage then have them build you a pool unlike any other.

The pools number of users

With Naples pool construction, you can get a quote of the number of users you would like your pool to have as such they will give you the estimated size that fits that description. You also tell them how often the pool will be used so that they can estimate the density of materials used in construction. You should consider your family size and preferences. Although your children may want a big pool, they will only use a small part of it. Therefore you have to opt for a reasonable option that is not too infringing.

Guests entertainment

When planning for pool construction, it is important to consider that at some point you may have guests and will want to entertain them with the pool. Naples pool and spa can help you add spa facilities for your guests and families when they visit town. Get a quote on the size and depth and color you prefer for the pool and have it done right.

Likelihood of family increase

When looking into finding the right pool, consider your family’s future and whether there is a likelihood that you will want more children and grandchildren. The size of the pool will matter if you want your grandchildren to use it. In your future years, you may want a spa facility added so with Naples spa construction companies, you can get a quote and have them add you a spa next to your pool.

Space availability

Before implementing into pool construction ideas, check whether you have the right amount of space that can suit a pool in your home. If you do not have ground, you can always go up and have a pool installed above ground let’s say the rooftop of your house. It could be more expensive and smaller than a ground pool.

Are You Observing Pool Safety?

Pool and spa construction experts offer advice on some tips to keep your swimming pool safe.

Safety barriers

These are physical structures installed to prevent access to the pool:

  • Install a fence of at least 4 feet in height. The fence should not have any footholds to facilitate climbing over.
  • The fence should have a self-latching gate
  • Install a pool cover that is strong enough to hold human weight without breaking
  • Install a pool alarm that goes off when someone gets into the water
  • Secure the door from the house to the pool with a lock above the reach of children

Supervision

The ‘buddy’ system should be strongly enforced. No children should be allowed to go near the pool unsupervised. Even experienced adults should have someone keeping an eye on them. Experienced swimmers drown from diving accidents.  Inexperienced swimmers should wear a US Coast Guard approved life jacket.

Swimming knowledge

All members of the family should be taught swimming skills by a qualified swimming instructor. The Red Cross provides age appropriate water orientation.

Emergency equipment

It is important to have water rescue equipment. These include:

  • Life hooks
  • Rescue tubes
  • Pool safety lines
  • Rescue cans
  • Spine boards
  • Life vests.
  • First responder emergency kit

It is crucial that everyone in the family learns how to use this equipment. In addition post emergency rescue numbers where they are clearly visible and a telephone next to it.

Diving board use

Naples pool construction professionals say it is inadvisable to have a diving board in a pool where there are children. The board will be a strong fatal attraction. Diving accidents involving adults happen when a person dives from the board jumping too far and hitting the head on the pool’s floor. The diving board should be regularly checked for rust and cracks.

Pool chemicals

Swimming pool cleaning chemicals are hazardous. Chlorine, which is the most commonly, used chemical, releases strong toxic fumes that can corrode the lungs. These chemicals can also burn the skin.

Follow proper instructions when administering these chemicals to the pool. This is to avoid skin, eye and nose irritation from too much chemical concentration.

What Essential Swimming Pool Equipment Should You Have?

,

Swimming pools are fun but maintaining them is quite some work. You need essential supplies and equipment to keep the pool hygienic and in functioning shape. You also need equipment to keep the pool safe and emergency equipment in case of accidents. SWFL pool construction experts say that it is highly recommended that you get this equipment and supplies.

Pool sanitizers

The swimming pool makes a good habitat for bacteria, algae and parasites. Pool sanitization materials can be chemical or non-chemical. The most common material used to make chemical sanitizers is chlorine and bromine. They come in form of powder, pellets and granules.

You can buy a pool dispenser to make administering these sanitizers easier and more uniform in the water such that they reach all the corners of the pool.

Pool skimmers

This is a must-have tool. It is used to scoop out leaves and other floating debris. The best design has a telescopic pole to extend its reach, and a fine mesh at the end to get pebble size debris.

Water pump and filter

While you can use a skimmer to take out larger debris in the water, you will need finer filter to get the small particles. There are different water filters with different gauges.  For the filtration to work better, you need a pump to circulate the water through the filter. Naples pool construction experts say that a standard sized pool can be filtered by the typical pump in 10 hours or so.

Pool covers and nets

SWFL spa construction professionals say that installing a pool cover can reduce cleaning work by as much as 70%. The cover is an effective barrier against falling debris like leaves. It also keeps out wind-blown dust and sand. A pool cover is also a very effective pool safety feature as it can prevent people and animals falling into the water. The different pool covers available include:

  • Safety covers – These covers are designed to hold weight and make a strong barrier. They come in meshed or solid impermeable form.
  • Leaf nets – These are light nets that can be laid and uncovered fast designed to keep away light debris.
  • Solar pool covers – These covers have an added advantage in warming the water. They also prevent excessive evaporation and help maintain warmth into the cold season.

Emergency equipment

To mitigate the risks of drowning, emergency equipment is needed. This includes water rescue equipment like life hooks, rescue cans, reaching poles, and floaters. You also need an emergency responder’s kit as well as a phone to summon emergency help.

September 6, 2017September 6, 2017

This letter is to make you aware of a potential tropical weather event in the Southwest Florida area. For the most up-to-date information, please visit: http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/

A few items to remember prior to the possible storm:

• Please secure or try to bring inside all loose items, patio furniture, umbrellas, toys, plants, decorations, barbeques, etc.   DO NOT throw grills or patio furniture inside of the pool. This can cause rust and damage to the pool finish.

• If you have a pool cage, take time to trim trees of extra limbs and branches around the area.  We do not recommend that you cut the screen enclosure panels.

• If you have deck drains or storm gutters, please make sure the drains and gutters are unobstructed and able to drain water away as efficiently as possible.

• If the storm makes landfall, we recommend all electric power for the pool equipment should be turned off at the subpanel and the main circuit breakers.

• We recommend that you never empty your pool.  Keeping sufficient water levels in your pool provides important weight to hold the sides and bottom in place. Pools that have been emptied may experience serous structural problems and could even be lifted off their foundations due to heavy water amounts adding pressure in the surrounding ground area.

• This is also a good time to make sure you have all your insurance information updated.

• As of today, 9/6/17, it is our objective to complete all scheduled work with the exception of digging holes.  We will do our best to resume all scheduled jobs once conditions improve.

What to expect after the storm:

• Many times, there are disruptions to telecom networks, please try to e-mail us should you need information or wish to communicate with us directly after the storm.

• www.nbc-2.com or www.winknews.com are the local channels that stream updates online. We would recommend following these channels for any local updates.

We will be monitoring the situation as it progresses. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact our office.
Stay Safe,

Top Swimming Pool Accessories to Increase Value

Has your pool become boring and it has been weeks since you got into the water, or you feel that it looks too bland and could do with some accessorizing? SWFL pool construction experts say that accessorizing your pool adds value to the overall home price in addition to heightened pleasure at the pool. Before accessorizing, it is important to be aware of the regulations that apply. With that out of the way, what are some of the top accessories for your pool?

Robot cleaner

If you clean the pool yourself, it must be one pain you look forward to with apprehension. But there is no way out; the pool must stay clean. However, you can make this painless by letting a machine work for you. Automatic pool cleaners are typically designed to clean the floor of the pool but some models can work on the sides too.

Solar cover

SWFL spa construction experts say that installing a heating system in a pool is an expensive undertaking which can be avoided by installing a solar cover. The cover works by taking in the heat from the sun and retaining it, and directing it into the water. A solar cover can raise the water temperature by as much as 8°C. The cover has an added advantage in preventing water evaporation and reducing the need to top up and add cleaning chemicals. You will also save a lot in terms energy bills.

Slides and diving boards

Slides and diving boards add an element of fun to the pool by making different water games possible. Pool and spa construction professionals say that it is relatively cheap to install these features as you can get plastic slides and diving boards.

Swimming machine

Want to better your swimming skills? A swimming machine is what you need. This machine pushes water at you at different speeds. Some can stream over 1 million of water per hour.   A swimming machine gives an experience just like you would in a pool with larger dimensions.

Swimming pool lights

Make your neighbors envious with underwater swimming pool lights. Naples pool experts say that there are affordable fiber encased underwater lights that can be easily installed.   Lighting adds a huge aesthetic appeal to the pool. The pool can also be used even at night.

It is important to consider the dimensions of your pool before picking pool accessories. The shape of the pool must also be taken into account when placing your accessories. It is also highly recommended that the installation be done by pool experts.

Top Tips to Keep Your Swimming Pool Trouble-Free

SWFL spa construction experts say a swimming pool can harbor all kinds of nasty bugs and parasites if it is not cared for. A clean pool has an aesthetic appeal and provides a pleasurable experience just as intended. Pool experts say there are simple tips you can apply to keep your pool trouble free.

Regular maintenance tasks

It is highly recommended that you install a pool cover. It will reduce cleaning work by as much as 70%. If you don’t have a pool cover, you should schedule pool skimming every 3 days. This keeps the water free of falling leaves and wind-blown debris.

You can make work easier by installing an automatic pool cleaner to clean the pool floor and walls. Clean the filters every 2 weeks by taking them out and hosing them using a pressure hose.

Sanitizing

SWFL pool construction experts say the easiest way of keeping the pool sanitized is by using chemical sanitizers. They come in form of granules, pellets and powder. You can drop directly into the water or use a pool dispenser for slower dispersal.  For a large pool consider using a chlorinator.

The killing effects of chemical sanitizers wear away with time. That is why you need to add shock to extend the sanitizing effects of chlorine or bromine. For a standard sized pool you should mix I pound of granular shock with 2.5 gallons of water and pour the mixture at different parts of the pond.

Adjusting pH levels

The water should remain at the right pH such that it is neither acidic nor too alkaline. Acidic pH is between 1—7. Alkaline pH levels are beyond 7. When the water is too acidic it irritates the eyes, nose and skin. It also corrodes pool equipment. When the water is too alkaline, it encourages algae growth which makes it turn greenish.

Clearing green water

Water will turn green when the pH levels are in the alkaline levels. It is a sign that there are high levels of fungi and algae in the water. But high levels of copper in the water can also give it a greenish hue. This is common with ion sanitized pools. Algae and fungi in the water can be killed using a water sanitizer like chlorine. Add the chlorine until the water is clear again.

Pool and spa construction experts say that algae and fungi can also be eliminated using natural moss. The moss preys on the fungi and algae. This is slower but keeps the pool comfortable by avoiding chemical sanitizers which are irritating.
